The most important lesson I learned during my time at Goldman Sachs:

It had nothing to do with investing.

I joined Goldman through the 2019 acquisition of United Capital and saw firsthand how powerful a name can be.

Yes, the talent is exceptional.

Yes, the platform is world-class.

But that’s not what clients were buying.

They were buying the brand.

The institution.

There is a different level of gravitas that comes with saying:

“Goldman Sachs manages my wealth.”

The minimums were $10M, and their target clients were $100M+ families.

Our minimums were $1M, and our target clients were $10M+ families.

When I left in February 2023 to launch PPW, Goldman sold off the division six months later.

(Clearly they couldn’t survive without me.)

It reinforced something simple:

Brand is leverage.

That lesson has shaped how we are building PPW.

Strong brands know exactly who they serve and who they don’t.

Financial Therapy

Not everyone needs a therapist. But almost everyone could benefit from having one. The same is true for a good financial advisor. Sometimes you just need someone to say, “That’s a bad idea.”
